Title: BIOASSY INDENTIFICATION OF WEED HOSTS OF RICE YELLOW MOTTLE VIRUS IN A LOWLAND ECOLOGY

Abstract: Ten cereal weeds commonly found in lowland rice ecology (Eleusine indica, Brachiria spp, Andropogona gayanus, Setaria pal/ideJusca, Paspallim vaginatllm. Panicum repens, Imperata cylindrica, Echinochloa spp., Isachaemum rogusum, and C)perus d!(formis.) were assayed for infectivity by Rice yellow mottle virus (RYMV). A completely randomized design with three replications was used. The weeds were transplanted at 3-leaf stage. Inoculation was accomplished at one week after transplanting. A control experiment was also conducted. A total of six observations were made, commencing from one week post inoculation (WPI). Plant heights, number of tillers per plant, number of infected tillers per plant and disease incidence were recorded. Statistical analysis indicated a significant effect of RYMV on plant height. The shortest at 2WPI in the weed s.p ecies Eleusine indica. Tiller number .p er .p lant was lower in the inoculated plants. The lowest was observed in Panicllm repens weed. Number of infected tillers per plant was highest in weed Paspaillm distichum. Disease incidence varied from 40-100 %. The result of this study indicated the ability of these weeds to facilitate the survival and ecology ofRYMV. Therefore, effective control measures should be undertaken.
