Abstract: Mobility Management Protocols are responsible for keeping track of mobile nodes and ensuring the accurate delivery of packets. Proxy Mobile IP (PMIP), one of such protocols, moves the signalling burden from the mobile node to the network, thereby minimizing power consumption and eliminating the need for modification of such nodes before it can be deployed. It however has the drawback of using non optimal routing paths due to triangular routing. This work is aimed at designing an efficient and effective shortest route detection algorithm in PMIP networks. An index assigned to all Mobility Access Gateways (MAGs) is used to enable the easy detection of the relative closeness of corresponding MAGs, which is then used in conjunction with the link conditions to determine the final routing path used to deliver packets. To evaluate the scheme’s performance, a PMIP Network was developed on the OPNET Modeller and Simulation tests performed. Results obtained show a 50 milliseconds reduction in the simulated end-to-end delay of packets when routed through the optimized route detected by the designed scheme over the original routing path of the PMIP scheme.
