Title: 1 AN EVALUATIVE STUDY OF THE ORGANIZATION AND THE USAGE OF ARCHIVAL RESOURCES IN THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES ENUGU BRANCH

Abstract: The study aims at assessing the organization and usage of archival resources in National Archives Enugu. This research work highlighted and discussed the concept of Archives, causes of archival resources deterioration, abuse and mishandling of archival resources, factors affecting archives, uses of archival resources and types of archival resources. The research study took into account the essence and need for organization and usage of archival resources in National Archives Enugu which include developments of south-east region and Nigeria spanning from historical, cultural, administrative, political, social, economical, and academic and other professions. The objectives of the research are; to elucidate how organization and usage of archival Resources affect development in academics and other spheres of life, to examine the problems affecting the organization and usage of Archival Resources of National Archives, Enugu Branch and to proffer solutions to problems affecting organization and usage of Archival resources of National Archives, Enugu Branch. The researcher adopted survey method employing the use of questionnaire to sample its respondents. Their responses was analyzed and presented in simple percentage and charts. The research findings showed that the efficient and effective organization and usage of archival resources National Archives Enugu are hampered by inadequate awareness on the part of the potential users of the archives, there are large amount of deteriorating archival resources, manual techniques deployed in cataloguing and indexing of archival resources and ineffective classification and shelving of archival resources; and inadequate funding of the archives. The implication of these factors was also identified as the following; low access or usage of the archival resources, lost of archival resources in the face of deterioration, delay in search of archival resources and inability to train 9 archivist on archival management, inability to embark on computerization of archival retrieval systems to keep abreast with current realities and challenges posed by information explosion and information technology application in information and record management. The researcher proffered the following recommendations rebranding the archives for more awareness of the archives existence, Ministry of information should take pro-active measures in computerization of the operations of the archives and upgrading standard of archives Enugu today’s class where it could sustain itself to preserving the nations historic valuables; and increase funding of activities of the archives to curb the challenges it is facing.
