Title: DEVELOPMENT OF ALTERNATIVE PROCESS FOR RECOVERY OF WHITE LIQUOR FROM BLACK LIQUOR IN THE PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY

Abstract: A study of the industrial process for chemical recovery in the pulp and paper industry has been undertaken. Considering the effectiveness of this process which eventually takes its toll on operation cost, there became a need to search for a more cost and recovery effective method. Though the method suggested in this work is theoretical, considering the fact that necessary and vital facts could not be easily reached, the study showed that this method has two major advantages over the industrial process presently in use. Energy spent in this process is less than in the present process in use. The chemical recovered is also more in this process. The problem of inorganic salts lost in the process is also overcome in this alternative method. Instead of the concentration of black liquor by evaporation of moisture which is followed by combustion employed in the industrial process, a process route which will employ liquid-liquid extraction, followed by combustion with all other processes afterwards left as in the case of the industrial method is suggested. vi
