Title: KINETIC STUDY OF THE PRODUCTION OF STARCH ADHESIVE

Abstract: This report studies the kinetics of starch adhesive production based on acid hydrolysis, (O.OIM HCL) using the bitter species of cassava starch. It also studies the stabilisation of the produced adhesive using a comhination of NaOH and CH}O as additive and stahiliser respectively to determine the best operating temperature, rate of consumption of reactant and best stabiliser combination. The best combination of stabiliser/additives for water hydrolysed starch adhesive was also looked into, for comparism with the acid hydrolysed adhesive. The results show that, the rate of the reaction increased as operation temperature increase within the temperature range considered, thus the rate at 90°C gave the best result. The stabilisation with the combination of Ig NaOH and 2mL CH20 at 90°C also gave the best result for the acid hydrolysed adhesive. The result is also better than the best obtained at the same condition for water hydrolysed adhesive. The optirilUm rate of production of starch adhesive was discovered to be 9.86 x 10-3 mol dm-3 min-! at a time of 50 min, at 90°C. Quality test such as cleanliness, weight per unit area, density, odour, shelf-life, viscosity, pH and adhesion to substrate reveals good comparism in quality with a tested commercial gum (Gum Arabic). This product satisfy the quality of marketed gum tested at 90 C production temperature
