Authors: ABUBAKAR, MAHMOOD
Issue Date: 30-May-2013
Abstract: This study is carried out to investigate the level of awareness and implementation of electrical safety among welders in Minna metropolis. Specifically this study determined:- The level of awareness of welders on electrical safety, the level of implementation of electrical safety knowledge acquired by welders and the ways of sensitizing welders for effective electricity safety and protection. Three research questions and two null hypotheses were formulated and tested to guide the study. The research design used in carrying out this study was a survey method, the total population of this study was identified from a list of registered workshops from Power Holding Company of Nigeria which was made up of 254 master trainer and apprentice welder with a sample of 192, which is 75% of the population, was derived in line with Yamane simplified formula for sampling and a structured questionnaires were used to interview the respondents. Data obtained was analyzed using frequency count, mean, standard deviation and z-test. Based on the findings related to ways of sensitizing welders towards electrical safety; Electrical safety awareness can reach welders via the use of Global System for Mobile communication (GSM) Bulk SMS (Short Message Service) and other findings are:- Inadequate personal protective equipment (PPE) is addressed by paying attention and treating electricity carefully while at work, All earth connections are mechanically strong and electrically adequate for the required current are not implemented and the welders are aware that shock result due to damaged insulation cable. It was recommended among others that Welders should learn administering of basic first aid knowledge for shock and burns so that they are prepared if an accident occurs. There is therefore need for electrical health and safety education of these welders inorder to promote positive health in the society.
