Abstract: A:BSTB .. ACT The refining of palm oil using locally available materials has been successfullY carried out through Thermal method and Adsorption method. Crude palm oil was degummed and neutralised. The treated palm oil was then bleached with different masses of activated clay and carbonised saw dust, and the results compared. Thermal bleaching of the crude palm oil was carried out /, o at 140 C and 3.1% colour reduction was achieved. For refining by adsorptive method, maxium colour reduction of 82% was achieved when 0.9g of activated clay was mixed with 109 of oil as compared. to 57.7% when carobonised saw dust was used. There is however substantial reduction in the vitamin content of the oil . • •
