Title: BIODIVERSITY OF PHYTOPLANKTON IN TAGWAI DAM OF NIGER STATE

Abstract: The research was done in TagWai dam which was constructed in 1978 for the purpose of domestic water supply. However, a lot of fishing activity research goes on in the dam. Sampling was done for a period of six (6) weeks, water sample was collected with the use of plankton net and identification was done to know the phytoplankton specie and also analysis were done to check the water quality parameters. The research shows that a total of 13 species from 4 taxonomic group were recorded. Chlorophceae (Green algae) was the most abundant with a percentage sum of 49.86% followed by Bacilliariophycea (Diatoms) with a percentage sum of 20.20% and cynophyceae (Blue green algae) 19.98%, whil~ the lowest was desmidiaceae (Desmids) 9.96%. 446, 224 was the mean abundance of the species while 4,012,000 is the total sum of specie abundance. The water quality of the four station was not significantly different from each other (P>0.05), this means that phytoplanktons are growing under the same water condition.
